Driving Range Transition

The driving range at SilverHorn is currently going through a transition phase. This usually takes place around the month of June every year as the overseed with Ryegrass that is planted in the fall dies. We overseed with Ryegrass in October to provide a nice surface to practice on during the winter and spring months. In combination with very heavy usage of the practice facility the Bermuda grass on the range needs time to fill in after the Ryegrass dies. We will need need to utilize the synthetic turf mats for the most part of June while we aggressively work on cultural practices and fertility rates to help grow the Bermuda grass back in on the tee.

Spring 2012

Come join Director of Instruction Rob Myers for the Vino and Golf League this Spring at SilverHorn Golf Club!  Enjoy great wine and hors d' oeuvres with a friendly crowd while improving your game.  During this four week league you will receive instruction on the 3 major phases of the game (full swing, short game and putting) as well as course management.  The first three class meetings will be conducted on the driving range working with technique, while the final two class sessions will be on course competitions.  The cost per couple is $325 per couple and includes the following:

•  6 hours of instruction on the 3 major phases of the game

•  2 hours of on-course instruction

•  All range balls, green fees, cart fees, and club rentals (if necessary)

•  3 glasses of wine per person, as well as hors d' oeuvres each class

•  Prizes following on-course competitions

May 18th 5:30pm-7:30pm

May 25th 5:30pm-7:30pm

June 1st 5:30pm-7:30pm

June 8th 5:30pm-8:30pm *on-course

SilverHorn Spring Maintenance Part 2

Neil Thrailkill our golf course superintendent and his staff are dedicated to our golf course and also dedicated to letting all of you know what they are doing out on the golf course. That is why Neil is here today to educate us a bit on what him and his crew are up to out there this spring.

Part Two- SilverHorn Spring Maintenance:

"Several other projects and cultural practices that the maintenance staff will be working on this Spring including the application of our pre-emergent herbicide/fertilizer product (click here to define pre-emergent) to prevent Spring/Summer annual grassy and broadleaf weeds and to aid in the green up and density of our Bermuda grass on our tees, fairways and rough areas. We plan on applying the product to a couple of holes a day over a period of two-three weeks. This application will require (the hole where the application is taking place) to be strictly cart path only the day of the application due to the burning potential of the herbicide.

We will also begin the aerification process on the tees and in the rough areas over the next month of so. We will use the turf slicer in the rough to relieve compaction from cart traffic and to promote Bermuda grass development in these areas as it has thinned coming out of the winter season (following one of the most severe droughts in San Antonio history).

Tee aerification should begin in two-three weeks to promote air exchange, aid in water infiltration, (click here to define water infiltration) and relieve compaction. The tee aerification should have very minimal impact playability. Fairway aerification will be scheduled mid June thru early July. 

We will continue to schedule our Maintenance on the driving range and practice tee on Tuesday mornings of each week. Our maintenance on the range includes mowing, fertilizer applications, seeding, sodding, top dressing, and other product applications. There might be some circumstances that will affect the day that maintenance is scheduled for these areas, but we will try to stick to this schedule.

As your maintenance staff, we consider this a critical time of the year and will try to work our cultural schedules to a minimal."

Spring Maintenance Aerfication

SilverHorn has one of the hardest working and most dedicated maintenance crews in the golf business. Ask anyone that comes to play SilverHorn and they will tell you that SilverHorn is constantly in great condition no matter what time of year it is and that is all because of the care given to the course by SilverHorn maintenance.

SilverHorn manitenance is lead by our superindentent- Neil Thrailkill. Neil built this course from the ground up and he continues to be dedicated to SilverHorn on a daily basis. For those out of the business golf course maintenance can be a bit confusing as to why certain things are done the way they are done, but today Neil is here to help educate us all on what Neil and his crew are working on right now at the course.

"As we move into the spring golf season at SilverHorn Golf Club, the Golf Course Maintenance staff would like to update you on some of the maintenance issues and cultural practices that will be taking place on the golf course over the next few months.

Addressing one of the most frequently asked questions- greens aerification (click here to define aerfication): our plan consists of aerifying 2-4 greens each week using smaller diameter aerification holes in early spring with the possiblity of increasing the diameter size of the holes as we get into the summer months when the Tif-Dwarf Bermuda grass on the grees is actively growing.

We will topdress (click here to define topdress) the greens as needed throughout this aerification process. The amount of sand that is applied will be dependent on the time of year of the aerification and the diameter size of the aerification holes that are used.

This aerfication process should speed recovery time on the putting surfaces and be more golfer friendly. The goal of our early aerifications of the greens is to provide a uniform surface transition from a green cool season Bluegrass (which is a cool-season turf) to an actively growing warm season Tif-dwarf Bermuda dwarf with minimal transition time and little adverse effect on ball roll. "
